Sex & Intimacy in Chronic Illness & Disability Illness and disability affect most people at some point in their lives and pose major challenges for sexual expression, connection, and pleasure. People with illness and their partners often find that loss of sexual expression and sexual well-being damages their quality of life and their motivation to be well. David Spero RN, a health coach and author living with multiple sclerosis (MS), will help you develop your ability to work with clients who are dealing with disability and long-term health concerns. You'll learn about the barriers to intimacy and love that chronically ill people face, and ways to help them solve these problems. Find out how to help people adapt their sexual practices to fit their limitations and find partners or strengthen connection with those they already have. These skills will help you enhance clients' well-being and may even improve your own sex life as well! David Spero, RN is a 55-year-old nurse, journalist, activist and health educator living in San Francisco. He coaches individuals with chronic conditions, leads wellness groups, and counsels healthcare providers on more effective ways to help their patients. David is author The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness (Hunter House 2002). He has also co-written educational programs for people with arthritis, asthma, chronic pain, and other conditions; and gives sex and intimacy workshops for the disabled and chronically ill for the MS Society and the Center for Sex and Culture.
