JULY '05 EVENTS

JULY 8th - Sexy Songstress Candye Kane and Big Burlesque Join Forces for a Night Of Big Big Fun!

San Francisco -- Dr. Carol Queen and the Center for Sex & Culture Proudly announce a very special upcoming event: An Intimate Evening of Excess with big beautiful bodacious bisexual blues diva Candye Kane and Big Burlesque, the Original Fat-Bottom Revue. Two unforgettable performance sensations bring their big big talents to the Center for Sex & Culture for one night only on July 8th! Candye Kane, porn starlet-turned-singer, promises a one-of-a-kind show as she performs dirty songs and bawdy ballads from the 1920s to the present. Candy's newest album, White Trash Girl (RUF Records), follows her other cult classics, Whole Lotta Love, The Toughest Girl Alive, Swango, Diva La Grande, Knockout, and Home Cookin'. Candye joins us with her pianist Sue Palmer just before heading to Austin, Texas. Signed CDs will be available from Candye at the event.

The Washington Post says that Ms. Kane's voice is "a natural wonder Like the Grand Canyon." Candye describes her style as "Mississippi by way of Las Vegas with a quick stopover in San Francisco." She has headlined the Monterey and San Francisco Blues Festivals, performed with many celebrities including k.d. lang and Lea Delaria, and appeared on Queer as Folk.

Joining Candye on the stage: the Big Burlesque dancers, fresh from a photo shoot with Leonard Nimoy! The Fat-Bottom Revue brings together big women who'll bump and grind their way right into your hearts. "A fun-filled burlesque show featuring women of size," said the San Francisco Chronicle. Big Burlesque has won Best of the Bay (2003) as well as the San Francisco Sex Worker Film Festival Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Sex-Positive Community.

On June 16th in the middle of the night, someone actually smashed Carol Queen and Robert's beloved truck, Dixie, when it was parked on the street. Carol and Robert were not in it, so they were not injured, but it was a hit and run accident, so there is no insurance to cover it. Dixie is truly a great truck, and she has done much volunteer work for the Center for Sex and Culture, carting around everything from food to furniture. She is very progressive and a hard worker. Dixie (her actual name) is a very historic truck! Reportedly she was once owned by a lesbian attorney couple who helped win Lawrence vs. Texas. Damages to Dixie total over $5,000 and it cost nearly $2,000 to get her running again. After that Robert will try to do the remaining work. They need this truck to keep the Center for Sex and Culture running, of course. Founding and running the CSC has been a labor of love for them; neither Carol nor Robert gets any kind of payment from that work. Robert's on disability and Carol handles the rest of their bills with her freelance work and her half-time job at Good Vibrations.

So, the Friends of Carol, Robert and Dixie are inviting you to a Dixie Revival Party at the Center for Sex and Culture/Epicenter Gallery on July 16th! We are also seeking volunteers and donations. Please let us know if you can volunteer, donate to a possible auction, or perform. 415-751-1659

[Note from CQ: Though the door does not go to CSC and this event is not sponsored by CSC, we're including it because Dixie the truck DOES do lots and lots of work for CSC! Please note that these donations are not deductible.]

Paul Reubens Day will be celebrated at CSC on July 23. If you're a
Pee-wee Herman fan, take note! More details soon!
