Every Tuesday Men's Massage Exchange
SF-MMEN -- Men's Massage Night
This group has formed to foster massage exchange amongst men with diverse
experiences of giving massage. Members are asked to be open to sharing
touch and respecting each others' boundaries. While some shared touch
is erotic in nature, this is not a requirement. The massage exchange is
on Tuesday evenings; members also belong to a Yahoo group, which is the
main vehicle for members to communicate. New members are asked to establish
a Yahoo profile with information about themselves and hopefully a picture.
Once they join, they are asked to post a message introducing themselves
to the group.
Men are expected
to have some massage experience, but if you're interested and don't have
much massage background, Mack, the group moderator, will suggest ways
of getting the experience necessary. Not all the members are working masseurs
or CMTs. However, the group is looking for a certain level of conscious
touch, so some experience is necessary. If you're interested in joining,
or simply getting more information about, this group, please contact Mack:
mstorton@sbcglobal.net.
1st and
3rd Wednesdays, 8 pm:
Women's HPV/Herpes Support Group
BREAK THE STIGMA: GROUP FOR WOMEN WITH HERPES AND/OR HPV (GENITAL WARTS).
Women with HPV and/or Herpes will talk about how having a Sexually Transmitted
Infection (STI) affects life, plus: * educational discussion about these
STI’s
* alternative health options for curing/preventing outbreaks
* sharing creative expression on these topics
Laughter and snacks may be included. In order to reach out to the greater
community of the Bay Area, we'll collect information, writings, articles
and pictures fostered by these meetings and produce an anonymous zine
for publication and distribution.

Friday,
November 25, 5:30-7:00 pm -- Marta Sanchez Workshop: Art Ending Sexual
Violence
At
the Center for Sex & Culture, 398 11th Street at Harrison (ring bell
marked 303 to left of door) $5 -- $50 sliding scale, but NO ONE turned
away for lack of $. No pre-registration necessary.
In order to eradicate sexual violence, communities must first deal with
the pervasive silence that enshrouds it. Many survivors deal with their
experiences in silence, never getting the support they deserve from professional
healers or even loved ones.
A different approach to ending sexual violence. The mere act of creating
can be one of radical protest and profound healing. For those who have
not found their voice, the usual dialogue is unlikely to be an effective
form of outreach. The use of art and writing can be a stepping stone toward
feeling safe enough to reach out for help.
Art is an effective means of exploring the problem of sexual violence.
Art is not only self-healing. It is a catalyst for dialogue. Discussing
sexual assault can be overwhelmingly painful, but the universal language
of art gives people a new, non-threatening way of communicating thoughts
and feelings too difficult to say with words.
Survivors and their communities can always access beauty and hope. Art
has the ability to connect individuals across gender, race, age, socio-economic
status and educational level, with truth. I create images to communicate
universal concepts so they can be easily understood. Through my paintings
and poems, I strive to share a message of hope and of healing.
A self-taught visual artist and poet, Marta Sanchez was born and raised
in Panama. She is a sexual assault survivor who uses art to break the
silence surrounding sexual violence and to heal invisible wounds. In sharing
her work, she aims to simultaneously raise awareness, reassure other survivors
and encourage the advocates who support them.
Sanchez, a former rape crisis center educator, is a graduate of the University
of Virginia School of Law and Spelman College. At the law school, she
served as assistant director for the Rape Crisis Advocacy Project, and
created and hosted the Project's "Survivor Art Group.” She
is a full-time artist and activist; visit www.poetryandart.org
If you are
a survivor, a counselor, a friend or an advocate, please come experience
Marta's powerful work. Patrick Califia, who just met her at a conference
in Eastern Europe, says of Marta: "Marta Sanchez is a powerful artist
and healer who has done deep and beautiful work on the issue of healing
from violence and sexual abuse. Her paintings and poetry cast a transforming
spell of reparative love. I learned so much about myself from attending
this workshop and felt inspired creatively as well as emotionally."
-- Patrick Califia, author of Public Sex
