JULY EVENTS

Join the Center for Sex & Culture as we welcome Cecilia Tan to San Francisco!

Cecilia Tan has presented her popular programs at conferences (Anything for Love, Northeast Bisexuality Conference, The International Celebration of Leather/SM/Fetish, Living In Leather, Readercon) and for sexuality education organizations both nonprofit and commercial (Society for Human Sexuality, National Leather Association, Grand Opening Boutique, TES NYC, and many more). She has spoken at Harvard, Columbia, Brown, and Princeton, where she got to lecture in the room that Albert Einstein used to teach classes in. She is the author of Black Feathers, The Velderet, Telepaths Don't Need Safewords, and other works and is the founder/publisher at Circlet Press.

Thursday, July 5, 7 pm -- How I Edited 30 Anthologies of Erotic Science Fiction and Kept My Sanity (I think...)
A fun-filled one hour lecture on the trials and travails on being the world's only publisher specializing in erotic science fiction and fantasy. Being a pioneer in a new literary genre can be fun, if frightening to the sensibilities from time to time. Find out what the Top Five Worst Story Ideas are, and how they compare to the Even Worse Titles list. Full of information and tips for aspiring writers, readers and fans of either genre, and post-modern literary ciritics in the making, Cecilia's presentation will leave you laughing, if not enlightened. Time: one hour (more if we dare do a Q&A afterward...). No charge, but donations for CSC will be gratefully accepted and split with Cecilia! At Borderlands Books, 866 Valencia St. (415 824-8203).

Friday, July 6, 7:30-9:30 pm -- Full-time, Long-term S/M Relationships
A talk aimed at the leather community, especially those who may be new to a full-time relationship. What happens when you go from a fun evening of groveling and spanking to living together? Just because I'm a submissive, does that mean I always have to be the one to wash the dishes? How much of the time can you be "in scene" and why? Are you sure you both mean the same thing when you say "slave"? Are master/slave contracts and marriage vows compatible? We provide a framework of common issues that need to be worked out, common pitfalls, and common questions that any individual couple must answer for themselves. Bring a notebook if you wish to take notes. Seminar time: 90 minutes to 2 hours (including 30+ minutes for directed discussion, Q&A). Please pre-register at mail@sexandculture.org -- we'll get you the address when you sign up. $20 per person, $35 per couple: all genders/orientations welcome.

Sunday, July 8, 2-4 pm -- Intimate Improv -- or Fantasy Into Reality
A seminar/workshop on how to use erotic role playing to deepen intimacy between partners and make good sex even better. Creating scenarios and playing "let's pretend" allows us to get at deep levels of erotic emotion, experience feelings we might otherwise not, and creates a bond of intimacy that can only be had through the kind of shared experience role-playing can provide. Techniques for sharing your fantasies, tailoring a scenario to your specific tastes, how to get started, props and costumes, and keeping it all within your budget, within legal limits, and safe, will be discussed. This seminar is open to couples and singles. Bring a notebook if you wish to take notes. Seminar time: 2 hours. $20 per person, $35 per couple: all genders/orientations welcome. At Good Vibrations' Polk Street store: 1620 Polk btw. Sacramento and Clay (415-345-0400). Please pre-register at mail@sexandculture.org.

Registration is currently open for the summer workshop session, which begins in early July:

  • Write Whole: Survivors Write begins July 9, and meets Monday evenings (6:30- 9:00p) in downtown San Francisco.
  • The mixed Declaring Our Erotic begins July 10, and meets Tuesday evenings (6:30-9:00p) in SoMa.
A little about how the workshops run:

  • Everything written and shared in the group meetings is 1) kept confidential, and 2) received as fiction. Fellow writers describe what they liked about and found powerful in the work shared.
The cost for the 8-week session is $200, and I'm always happy to work out payment plans with folks as needed. If you'd like to participate in the workshops, please give me a call at 415-608-3398 or let me know the best number to use for you, as well as some good times to call. Monday, July 16, 7:30 pm -- HOW THE CLITORIS GOT LOST with Rebecca Chalker

How the Clitoris Got Lost and an Anatomical Tour Through the Rediscovered Clitoris uncovers changing definitions of women’s genital anatomy from the Greeks through Freud, and finally to contemporary anatomists. Chalker, author of The Clitoral Truth, reveals that the clitoris is not a minor “love button,” as is commonly perceived, but an extensive, powerful organ system that is equivalent to the penis in all respects.

$20 ($30 for both Rebecca Chalker classes, see below) -- CSC now accepts VISA, MasterCard, and Discover cards.

At CSC 290 Division, Suite 405, cross streets 10th and Brannan.

Wednesday, July 18, 7 pm -- SEXUAL REVOLUTIONS with Rebecca Chalker

The social upheaval of the 1960s is still widely seen as “the” sexual revolution, but cultural transformations throughout history have effected dynamic changes in how sexuality has been perceived and practiced. This lavishly illustrated presentation documents the cultural history of sexuality from prehistory to the present, and, using materials that are routinely censored from standard texts, art histories and museum displays, reveals the roots of modern sexual values and practices. In light of these revelations, you’ll never look at sex the same way again! Rebecca Chalker is Adjunct Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Pace University in New York City where she teaches a course that she developed entitled “Sexual Revolutions from the Ice Age to the New Millennium.” Her latest book, The Clitoral Truth, was featured on “Sex and the City.” She speaks internationally on sex and women’s health, and lives in New York City.

$20 ($30 for both Rebecca Chalker classes) -- CSC now accepts VISA, MasterCard, and Discover cards.

At CSC: 290 Division Suite 405, cross 10th and Brannan.

Thursday July 26, 7-10 pm: SEX AND SHAME: MOVING TOWARDS WELL-BEING

Sexuality and shame are complicated experiences that are often misunderstood. This confusion makes identifying, exploring and responding to sexual shame especially challenging. Through the lens of Attachment Theory, we will explore the developmental role of shame, its place in our emotional lives and the relationships between shame and self-regulation of affect. This will serve as a foundation for a discussion of the ways in which both maladaptive and pro-social shame influence sexuality, in order to explore strategies for responding to sexual shame that foster interactive repair. Using a combination of presentation, discussion and group exercises, we will deepen our understandings of the roles of sexual shame and the part it plays in our lives.

Charlie Glickman, PhD is the Director of Education at the Center for Sex & Culture and the Education Program Manager at Good Vibrations. He also co-teaches classes in sexuality at JFK University and the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he focuses on helping his students explore how mental health professionals can help their clients enhance their sexual well-being. Charlie offers workshops on sexuality education practices for educators and has presented at numerous conferences and classes. He can be contacted at workshops@charlieglickman.com.

Objectives:

  • By the end of this session, the participants will be able to:
  • Describe the relationship between shame and attachment.
  • Identify at least three ways in which shame affects sexuality and sexual relationships.
  • Describe at least two strategies for helping people respond to sexual shame.
This workshop is approved for 3 AASECT CE credits.
