MAY EVENTS

EVENTS WITH FRIENDS OF CSC:

One of CSC's first-ever interns, Nellie Wilson, is teaching for National Masturbation Month with Roy Turpin:

Self Loving: Getting Back to the Source (2.5 hours, 7-9:30pm) -- May 11
Touching yourself for pleasure is something that we humans instinctually do from
the moment we are born. This touch includes the genitals as part of the whole of
who we are. As we grow up we are taught that self pleasuring touch, specifically
masturbation is bad, not to be talked about, to be done in silence if not in
shame. This evening will provide a safe container to face these taboos
surrounding masturbation. Through gentle exercises and lively discussion we
will return to the innocence of self pleasuring that we all had as children and
explore the delight and depth of experience it can offer us as adults.

Self Pleasuring: Taking the Covers off Masturbation (6 hours, 10-5pm) -- May 12
We are the source of our own pleasure. Going deeper with Self Loving, this
workshop will explore our capacity to generate, direct, absorb, and contain
erotic energy. Through exercises, breathwork, and self-touch, we will explore
levels of excitement, mindful masturbation, and expanded orgasm for men and
women. We will also explore being witnessed self pleasuring, partnered
masturbation, self loving rituals, and being an advocate for your own pleasure.

Bios:
Roy Turpin, MA, CSB, transpersonal counselor, sexological bodyworker, somatic
erotic educator and sex coach. Roy works confidentially and respectfully with
all gender and relationship orientations to facilitate erotic embodiment.

Nellie Wilson, masturbation advocate, student of sexological bodywork and sex
educator. Nellie brings her curiosity, personal explorations and skill as a
facilitator to creating a safe space for all people to explore the depth and
breadth of erotic experience.

Cost:
Friday $20
Saturday $90
Both days $100

Friday, May 18, 6--9 pm: READING FOR PERFORMANCE
performance techniques for reading, taught by award-winning erotic author and former Laney College Theatre Professor Blake C. Aarens.

This class focuses on the public reading of erotic fiction. For committed writers with a current project or those who want to get all of those stories out of their heads, onto the page, and out into the world. Included: work with character, dialogue, point of view and point of narration, and developing fluency in the language of the erotic. Using acting games and exercises, and vocal and breath techniques, participants will build a strong foundation in acting fundamentals to accomplish grace, ease, and depth of characterization when reading their erotic work. Come to class ready to read! Bring a piece to practice with.

Blake C. Aarens has been published in the journals Ache: a Journal for Lesbians of African Descent, Open Wide, and Good News, and in Penthouse Magazine. Her essays and fiction have been anthologized in Virgin Territory, the Herotica series, and Tasting Life Twice: New Lesbian Fiction by Emerging American Writers, to name a few. Her play Heart Failure won honorable mentions at both the 1999 Bay Area Playwrights Festival and the 2000 Competition. Her play The Prince of Whiteness was named the invited play to the 53rd Conference on World Affairs in Boulder, Colorado. She holds a B.A. in Rhetoric (Creative Writing) from the University of Illinois, and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing (Playwriting) from Saint Mary's College of California. She served as the Acting Professor in the Theatre Arts Department at Laney College in Oakland, CA from Fall 2000 through Spring 2004.

Location: the Center for Sex & Culture, 290 Division (at 10th/Brannan), Suite 405
Cost: $25 (free to "Virgin Voices" readers). Please note: The class explores techniques expanded on in Blake's 8-week "writing for performance" course, and any participants of this workshop who wish to sign up for Blake's future class series at CSC can deduct this evening's fee from the longer course payment.

Please email us or call CSC at (415) 255-1155 to register.

Saturday, May 19,10am - 4pm -- COME EXPERIENCE THE DIVINE THROUGH YOUR BODY
with Barbara J. Buckley LCSW & Dr. Kirk Prine, CMT

A workshop for queer women (lesbians, bisexual, and transgender) and brothers from Flesh & Spirit Community to experience the Divine through their bodies.

The queer men attending are required to have done prior Flesh & Spirit work; there are no prerequisites for queer women attending.

Creating a Safe and Sacred Space-
A facilitative staff of Barbara J. Buckley LCSW, and Dr. Kirk Prine, CMT integrative bodyworker, healer, queer community builder and teacher of erotic spirituality.

  • ritual
  • breathwork
  • toning
  • chant movement
  • intentional touch/energywork (clothes on)
  • storytelling
  • visualizing prayer
  • sourcing guides/ancestor energies
About Barbara J. Buckley, LCSW:
I am a counselor, spiritual teacher and healer. Especially in my crone years, I have been on an intentional path to bring the divine and the erotic together in my own being and to support others in finding that experience for themselves. As an LCSW working with cancer patients, I have been honored to witness growth, power ande self love in all sorts of circumstances and bodily situations. In my connection since 2000 with MCC/SF, I have deepened my knowledge of my own divine nature, and discovered embodied, queer spirituality. With my partner, Barb Hargrave, I am committed to continuing the journey to the integration of sex and god (erotic and divine, flesh and spirit) for myself, my relationships and in community.

More about the workshop:
Andrew Harvey in his book, The Essential Gay Mystics, says, "'From Sappho to Whitman, Vergil to Audre Lorde same gender lovers have been foremost in the ranks of artists whose work reflect this" vision of the sacredness of love, a belief that the divine revels in our passion for joy and beauty and manifests through and in it.'"

This union with God/Goddess, Spirit, Life Force, the Divine, the Beloved is the archetype of the Mystic. As queer people our stories of mysticism have been both common to all and yet unique to us. The interaction of Spirit through our bodies we have known in the ways we love, heal and create ecstasy. Mystics like Peaceful Warriors, Lovers, Sacred Prostitutes and Elder archetypes have been survivors. They are women and men who listen with their bodies and their hearts to the Divine. Mystics like these other four archetypes have "been their own authority" as to living their lives with Spirit as they experience it, (with or without the approval of others). Queer people by their very nature demonstrate that kind of survivorship that is filled with artistic creativity, intuition, body wisdom, healing and compasionate-power that that make us mystical as both individuals and as tribes.

Preparation for the Workshop:
  1. Bring images, memorabilia, sacred objects etc. that connect you with some aspect of the Divine for a small personal altar.
  2. For those who like readings: "Entering the Castle" Caroline Myss, PhD. or "The Essential Gay Mystic" by Andrew Harvey.
  3. Muse on how you experience the Divine through your body. You might also consider an ancestor, saint, or holy person who has inspired you thus far on your journey that you might welcome into our circle.
Registration fee is $120..

Some preparation is suggested but not required.

Location: The Center for Sex & Culture, 290 Division Suite 405
